SORSOGON CITY: Now it can be
told. It’s the widow and not the son who would seek to replace the late Cong
Salvador Escudero III as the province’s representative for the first district
come 2013 elections.
Senator Francis Escudero
himself broke the news before barangay officials and political supporters who
flocked to the Escudero residence at Barangay Buhatan here for the 40th day of
the death of his father days ago.
The senator was quoted as
saying that it was the consensus reached by the family and key leaders to field
his mother, Dr Evelina Guevarra Escudero, as candidate for congressman in next
year’s election.
A source said the widow’s candidacy has the full backing of Gov Raul Lee.

Earlier reports had it that the
Escuderos would field the senator’s brother, Philip, but it was not clear why
it did not push through.
Philip had been visiting
barangays in the first district since last year in the company of his father.
The surprise announcement was
met with enthusiasm by the barangay officials and supporters especially the
women who were excited by the thought that a woman would be representing the
first district for the first time.
“At last, we will have a woman
legislator who could champion our cause,” Barangay Chair Lita Lee of Pantalan,
Magallanes, stressed.
“We already had a woman
governor, so it’s about time that a woman should also represent us in
congress,” Barangay Captain Florenda Labalan of Banacud, Magallanes said in the
dialect.
A member of the Board of
Regents of the University of the Philippines, the soft-spoken widow is expected
to be formally presented to the public once she has already filed her
certificate of candidacy this week.
Escudero was recently appointed
by Pres Aquino to the highest governing body of the UP system last February 6,
2012 where she had been the president of the UP Alumni Association Hostel and
Canteen Services.
She is also a professor at the
OB Montessori College and an accredited assessor of the Technical Education and
Skills Development Authority (TESDA).
She obtained her doctorate
degree in Education as well as her Master in Arts and undergraduate degree in
